Vanessa Bryant Shares Release of Kobe Bryant’s New Book Series
While Kobe Bryant was a basketball legend, loving husband and father, he was also known to have a passion for writing. On the 31st of March a novel from his children’s book series was released and his wife, Vanessa Bryant, celebrated the event on Tuesday afternoon. The series’ Season One was written by Bryant before his death in January and is the sequel to The Wizenard Series: Training Camp –a New York Times bestseller.
Vanessa Bryant announced the release of the book to her followers on social media with the caption “Welcome back to Dren! We hope you are all ready to catch up with the West Bottom Badgers for another magical basketball season. ‘The #Wizenard Series: Season One’ is Out Now.”
This announcement was also posted on the former basketball player’s Instagram account and is the first post on Kobe’s page since the helicopter crash that claimed his life as well as the life of nine people, including his daughter Gigi Bryant.
The first book depicts the West Bottom Badgers, a team in a poor neighborhood and their coach, Professor Wizenard, who directs them with experience and magic. The sequel follows the life of one of the players.
As expected, The Wizenard Series, created by Bryant and written by Wesley King, is the tale of a young basketball player named Reggie. Reggie is an athlete with dreams of becoming a famous basketball player but found himself, not just as a bench warmer, but also playing for the most horrible team in the competition. Despite the conditions, however, Reggie is dedicated to put in extra efforts and achieve his dreams. To do so, he must begin with surviving the ordeals of practice.
While the series will be relatable to upcoming basketball players, the addition of magic also makes it perfect for fantasy lovers. Bryant believed combining fantasy and sport makes the message resonate better. He once shared that he was inspired after reading the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.
“Sport/fantasy is a blend of two of my passions: sports and fantasy storytelling. I’m a voracious reader and huge Harry Potter fan,” Kobe revealed to Barnes and Nobles in 2019. “…and I think kids respond to lessons they learn while being entertained. It connects back to my desire to want to bring joy back to youth sport while teaching important life lessons.” He added.
Kobe Bryant collaborated with Wesley King, a NY Times best-selling author for both fantasy novels. King shared on twitter, “bittersweet without my collaborator but grateful to see the words live on. This is a book about chasing your dreams.”
