The Rare singer revealed that she recently sought medical assistance with a psychiatrist and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. “Recently I went to one of the best mental health hospitals in America, McLean Hospital,” Selena told her host. “After years of going through different things, I realized that I was bipolar… when I got to know more information, it actually helps me.”
Selena continued saying that the knowledge of the disorder reassured her and that she doesn’t feel scared of it as most people would expect. Instead, she is happy she now understands the reason she experiences some emotions.
She explained this saying, “When I was younger, I was scared of thunderstorms and my mom bought me… different books on thunderstorms. She said ‘the more you educate yourself on this, the morning you aren’t going to be afraid’”. The method was successful, and the fear of thunderstorms disappeared.
So when she found out she had the disorder, she felt both relieved and terrified. “Terrified because the veil was lifted but relieved that I finally had the knowledge of why I had suffered… various depressions and anxieties for so many years.”
Gomez had never been fully aware of this condition and had been unable to get answers for so long. “I’m from Texas, it’s just not known to talk about mental health,” she said. Now she is happy that she feels confident enough to speak about her mental health with the world.
According to the Mayo Clinic, mental bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that includes emotional ups and downs such as hypomania, anxiety, and depression. The Look At Her Now singer has been known to stay at rehab frequently over the years for anxiety, depression, therapy, and other mental health issues.
Further on the show, the singers went on to talk about the toll the coronavirus pandemic was taking on the world. Selena pointed out the importance of communication at a time like this. She talked about how she personally grieves over what people affected by the virus are going through. “Being there for others actually helps me too but sometimes I have to feel it. Sometimes I have to cry it out, release it and take a deep breath then remind myself to go back to my tools, which is okay.” She explained.
Known for her activism, Gomez talked about donating a part of her merchandise profits to hospitals. This week she had made donations to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to help fight the virus.
Bright Minded: Live With Miley has hosted many other celebrities like Demi Lovato, Emily Osment, Hilary Duff, and Hailey Bieber and each time, Cyrus has interested her audience with enlightening topics. “I’m so happy we got to reconnect,” Miley told Gomez at the end of the show. She suggested they catch up after the quarantine and “just hug.”
The singer later took to Instagram to announce a Deluxe Edition of her latest Album ‘Rare.’ She added that a portion of the proceeds from the merchandise will be donated to the PLUS1 Covid-19 relief fund.
