A League of Their Own Ordered to Series By Amazon
Amazon has officially shared that A League of Their Own will be getting a series. Just like the 1992 film, the series will be telling the tale of a generation of women with a burning desire to play professional baseball. The series will also touch on current and important topics such as sexuality and race. Viewers of the show will follow a wide array of characters on their different journeys as each of them work hard to get to the baseball league.
The hour-long series created by Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios. Hailey Wierengo from Field Trip Productions and Jamie Babbit served as the series executive producers. Babbit also directed the pilot and Elizabeth Koe served as a co-executive producer.
In a statement, Amazon shares that “This reinterpretation of A League of Their Own evokes the joyful spirit of Penny Marshall’s beloved classic, while widening the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball.”
Chante Adams and Jacobson play the series leads and the show also stars Gbemisola Ikumelo, D’Arcy Carden, Kelly McCormack, Priscilla Delgado, and Roberta Colindrez. It also features recurring guest stars Kate Berlant, Melanie Field, and Molly Ephraim.
According to the Co-Head of Television, Amazon Studios, Vernon Sanders, “There’s no crying in baseball, or at Prime Video. Will and Abbi have taken a classic movie, reimagining it for a new generation with new characters and their own fresh, modern vision on a timeless story of big dreams, friendship, love, and of course, baseball. We’re so excited to partner with Sony to bring this emotional, exciting new series to our Prime Video customers around the world.”
Graham and Jacobson also share similar sentiments. “28 years ago, Penny Marshall told us a story about women playing professional baseball that up until then had been largely overlooked. We grew up obsessed with the film, like everyone else. Three years ago, we approached Sony with the idea of telling a new, still overlooked set of those stories. With the help of an enormously talented team of collaborators, an amazing cast, and the devoted support of Amazon to this project, we feel beyond lucky and excited to get to bring these characters to life. It took grit, fire, authenticity, wild imagination and a crackling sense of humor for these players to achieve their dreams. We’re hoping to bring audiences a story with all of those qualities.”
Jeff Frost, Sony Pictures Television President, also commends Will and Abbi for doing a great job with the series. “Abbi and Will have done a masterful job of reimagining this timeless classic. We are very thankful to our partners at Amazon for bringing this incredibly relevant and important story to audiences around the globe.”
A League of Their Own is a series fans of the Penny Marshall 1992 film will love. With Queer, Black, and Latinx actors casted in the movie, it is expected to cover a variety of trending social issues.
